The design of a security model: an analytical and criminological approach

Frequently within companies and organisations from different sectors, there is a simplification of the role that security can play in the organisational processes of companies, which are mainly focused on sales and development activities. Companies are inclined, in fact, to 'compartmentalise' security-related functions internally, re-distributing the responsibilities that fall under the umbrella of risk management between Security, HSE and Facility, structures that are interdependent but characterised by different mechanisms and dynamics.

The sudden mutation of risk scenarios that companies are induced to face and the now widespread need to develop multi-level corporate resilience must, however, stimulate reflection on the importance of adopting an integrated security management model. In the specific field of planning, the progressive evolution of digital and innovative solutions forces one to move away from the product-price logic, to embrace a multi-disciplinary approach dedicated to analysing the actual level of risk.

In this sense, the inclusion of criminological skills and experts adequately trained in risk management can prove strategic in the development of security projects. For example, in the preliminary assessment phases and in the definition of ad hoc project and procedural measures, the adoption of a method of analysis capable of introducing elements linked to criminalistics, statistical research and the study of social and cultural phenomena can represent a crucial advantage in the process of identification and subsequent assessment of risk levels.

The aim is to develop an effective and functional strategic path that harmonises the role of security within companies, thus disregarding the exclusive consideration of the technical and/or technological component, in order to guarantee instead a real governance of risk.
It is, therefore, essential to employ a transversal approach to the management of dynamics and issues related to corporate security, in view of the ever-changing physical and logical contexts within which companies and organisations are called upon to operate.
